In July 2020, Pieter van der Westhuizen — brother of the late Springbok rugby legend Joost van der Westhuizen — acted with bravery and precision when he defended fellow churchgoers from an armed robbery in Wierda Park, Centurion. A former police officer, Pieter used his training and experience to respond decisively in a life-threatening situation during a Sunday church service.
Armed Attack Inside a Place of Worship
During the service, three armed criminals stormed into the church and began threatening and assaulting congregants. The pastor, Kobus Erasmus, was physically attacked and sustained head injuries. Before the attackers could cause further harm, Pieter drew his legally owned firearm and, with calm and accuracy, shot two of the suspects, fatally wounding them. The third assailant fled the scene.
Police Investigation and Legal Outcome
A full investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) concluded that Pieter acted in lawful self-defence. No charges were brought against him. Pastor Erasmus sustained only minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
A Story of Courage and Legal Preparedness
Pieter van der Westhuizen’s actions exemplify the core principle behind Firearms Guardian’s message: “You Are Your Own Guardian.” His story is a reminder that personal safety in South Africa often requires individuals to be trained, prepared, and legally armed — especially in situations where law enforcement cannot respond in time.
Sadly, incidents like these highlight the dangers South Africans face — even in places of worship. In a country where crime often strikes without warning, concealed carry and regular firearm training remain essential for those serious about protecting their families and communities.
