In July 2020, Pieter van der Westhuizen \u2014 brother of the late Springbok rugby legend Joost van der Westhuizen \u2014 acted with bravery and precision when he defended fellow churchgoers from an armed robbery in Wierda Park, Centurion. A former police officer, Pieter used his training and experience to respond decisively in a life-threatening situation during a Sunday church service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the service, three armed criminals stormed into the church and began threatening and assaulting congregants. The pastor, Kobus Erasmus, was physically attacked and sustained head injuries. Before the attackers could cause further harm, Pieter drew his legally owned firearm and, with calm and accuracy, shot two of the suspects, fatally wounding them. The third assailant fled the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A full investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) concluded that Pieter acted in lawful self-defence. No charges were brought against him. Pastor Erasmus sustained only minor injuries and was treated at the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
